enough to drag gupta from the grave

my dad sent me this with just the modest subject line: Have you seen this 10 min yoga video?

what i'm subscribing to on youtube these nights

.... the videoblog of komikero. The subject-artist is a freelance comic book illustrator whose real name is Gerry (which is the Filipino equivalent of Jerry; I think it is short for Gerard.) Besides putting me in touch with my better half, his videos lull me to midafternoon sleep with a thin smile curled on my lips. That's him narrating the video while his tatay ("father" in Tagalog) tells jokes. The dad kinda reminds me of Mr. Sriskandarajah. Although Gerry and his family live in the Philippines and are not Filipino-American, Gerry speaks excellent English (with a pleasingly thick accent) and is totally tuned into American and international pop culture:

the ending is good, no?) However, most of the 292 videos featured on his channel deal primarily with the small pleasures one finds in a life spent working from home: the well-being of his two dogs, speculating on the weather away from his drafting table, thoughtful consumption of the snacks of his (our) homeland. No water-cooler pretense for this videoblogger. It goes without saying that, similar to Jordan, Gerry's existence is heavily mediated by the internet. A favorite topic of talk is Youtube (see March 13's entry: "Shout Out Bidjo!"). Not too much should be lost in translation....

Gerry's style is casually conversational, as demonstrated by his responsiveness to viewer commentary. This is a very desirable trait in consistent Youtube uploaders. The length of the videos are sometimes stretched to accommodate his inclination towards multitasking; he'll often speak to us while combing his hair or putting the final touches on some artwork. Viewers are occasionally taken on a field trip to a comic book conference or a Punk Rock Show (Jan 03 2009).

The March 17th video "Powerless Against Us" shows Gerry as his most charming, rhetorically-stirring and facially-expressive self, while tripping over pronouns in the Filipine fashion as he answers a question posed by a subscriber: "How do you deal with haters?". At the height of his illocutionary powers, it is an excellent jumping-off point for starting your subscription.

Lonesome on the Couch and No Ice in My Glass

I have a question. I guess it is mostly aimed at Sanjay. I'm looking to watch MadMen but I don't know the best way to do it. I have no television at the moment, and I don't do bitorrents. There is a scarcity of full episodes on the Tube. Advice, please?

Jin,

Where should I go in China? I'm traveling around for a month starting tomorrow, and I want to know where you and Jeremy were dizzy with wonder.

The only problem is that all trains are going to be completely booked for the next month because of Chinese New Year, so I'll be taking buses everywhere. I think this might be a bad idea. Is it?

This is who Sanjay should have called July 4th weekend, 2008.

Well Ike, perhaps an overseas employment opportunity awaits? The amenities and lifestyle sound great, if only you can dig working for a white lady with a behind the size of a house-- who thinks poachers represent humanity entire in order to thus deduce that we're all scum.

orientalizing the Other

Hello gents, I'm a little tweaked out on ankle medicine, so 'scuse me if I turn nonsensical.

But has anyone every noticed that this Arab:

YO HO HOES

I am stuck in Providence for the holiday, all by my lonesome (s)elf.

This has had the peculiar effect of volting me with an unprecidented charge of xmas spirit. So please, humor me and send me your mailing addresses-- I have some tasteful cards I want to send to you all.

And Jordan...I know you'll be a vagabond in the East for the next month so just give me your LA address and then you'll have something to come home to.

An Apology

I haven't made any updates to the blog because I have my own blog to attend to. And no, you cannot have a link to it, although it's easily among the best ESL blogs out there.

I feel kinda bad about this tho, so here are some old Family Guy clips to entertain you

don't steal my bronze door knob to make copper wire

I am new...Someone told me today that the Bloggersphere is embedded with a sizable first-move advantage--all those chess games that you lost SOLELY b/c you chose black, like all gentlemen would...the hours you spent on that backseat all by yourself b/c you didn't blitz...all those girls that you never get to dance and have fun with b/c you didn't cry...well...and now, blogging--The earlier bloggers are not necessarily more experienced, nor any more creative, more motivated, or better in anyway, but they earned their bragging right b/c they so happen to saw that thicket of hays in the distance, which they wanted to burn them all down anyway, and with a bit of luck, noticed a light beauty in them.

I am seeing a forest, in case you haven't notice.
I want my LAPtop to be fully powered, anytime, anywhere.
